Aubrey Kingsley Loomis died on 19 November 2017 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 89.1 He was buried at Palisado Cemetery, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.1

From the Hartford Courant, 23 Nov 2017:

Aubrey Kingsley Loomis, 89, Commander US Navy, retired, died peacefully in his home in Windsor, Connecticut on Sunday, November 19, 2017 ending a long and rich life of service to country, education, community, and family.

Born and raised in Kent, CT and Baltimore, VT, Aubrey graduated from Kent School, Harvard University (BS in physics) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MBA). His 22-year Navy career spanned the period of the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, and Vietnam War, and included tours on ocean-going vessels from carriers to destroyers to submarines. He served in a number of capacities in the submarine service - among them navigator on the first, gold crew on the polaris missile submarine, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and captain of the submarine USS Sterlet. In his last tour of duty, he was second in command of the NROTC at Rensselaer during the tumultuous years at the close of the Vietnam War. At a time at Rensselaer when all the other military programs and the president's office were closed by student protests, the Navy ROTC invested in donuts for, and dialog with, students. It paid off and the program remained active.

Aubrey retired from the Navy in 1972 and came to the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT. During his 23 years at the helm of the finance and administrative functions, the school was able to expand its physical footprint, renovate many buildings, grow the endowment, and thrive financially. He was proud to teach an algebra class each year, thoroughly enjoyed time on the ice as a coach for club hockey, and valued the opportunity to connect individually with students as an advisor. Thousands of students benefited from his dedicated service to the school.

Retiring from Loomis Chaffee in 1995, Aubrey expanded the commitment to volunteer work that had been part of his life for so many years. A Paul Harris Fellow of the Windsor, Windsor Locks, and East Granby Rotary Club, Aubrey was instrumental in fund raising for charities and served a term as the club's president. He was a member of First Church in Windsor and was on various boards, serving as church treasurer for a number of years. He was also a long-time treasurer of the Windsor Historical Society. Aubrey volunteered weekly at Hartford Hospital. He was a reading tutor for first grade students at the Rawson School in Hartford. On the social side, he was a many year member of the Windsor Club where he was well-known for his terrible jokes. In his neighborhood he served as the president of the Orchard Acres Water Association.

Throughout their lives together, Aubrey and his wife of 61 years, Marillyn Dirks Loomis, took time to travel extensively, in and out of the country - at times with family, at times with friends. Beloved as the anchor for his family, Aubrey is survived by his wife, Marillyn, and his children Loren W. Loomis Hubbell, Dr. Rebecca C. Loomis (Dr. Jack Gentul), Dirk K. Loomis, and John K. Loomis (Lisa). Eight grandchildren called him Gramp - Alex (Brittany) and Robert Gentul, Peter and Emma Hubbell, Kyle and Logan Schneider, and Adrienne and Walker Smith. Many called him their godfather. Aubrey was predeceased by his parents Clifton K. and Edith (Mutch) Loomis.

Services will be held at the First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Avenue, Windsor, CT on December 2, 2017 at 11 a.m., the Rev. Nicole Grant Yonkman, pastor, officiating. Private burial in the Palisado Cemetery, Windsor, will be at the discretion of the family. In lieu of sending flowers, those who wish to honor Aubrey's memory are encouraged to contribute to First Church in Windsor, CT or the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital. Carmon Funeral Home has care of the arrangements. For directions or condolences please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.

b. 16 September 1931, d. 15 September 2021
Marillyn Dirks was born on 16 September 1931. She married Aubrey Kingsley Loomis, son of Clifton Kingsley Loomis and Edith McCallum Mutch, on 22 September 1956. Marillyn Dirks died on 15 September 2021 at age 89.

From the Hartford Courant, 19 Sep 2021:

Marillyn Dirks Loomis died peacefully at home on September 15, 2021, with her family by her side. Blessed Mother and Grandmother, devoted Godmother, dear friend, and tireless volunteer, she will be missed by the many, many people whose lives she touched. Born September 16, 1931, Marillyn was raised in Akron, Ohio. There she attended Old Trail School, making lifelong friends. From Old Trail it was on to Wellesley College (BA, French). After college she joined AT&T in their first "class" of executive training for young women. Living with college chums in an apartment in NYC, she took in much of the cultural life the city offered. One story was standing in a line that stretched 'round the block, in a snowstorm, to get tickets to "My Fair Lady" the day after it opened. To the end, the Sunday New York Times was a "must." While visiting her parents in New London, CT, she met a dashing young submarine officer, Aubrey Loomis. Romance blossomed and they were married on September 22, 1956. When asked many years later if he were a lucky man, Aubrey emphatically agreed that he was the luckiest. Over the years the family expanded to include their four children. If Aubrey was the anchor for the family, Marillyn was surely the boat that kept the family afloat through countless navy moves and all the many details of daily family life. In 1973, with Aubrey retired from the Navy, the family settled in Connecticut and began their long association with the Loomis Chaffee School. Marillyn worked in the library in a variety of functions from circulation to cataloging to archivist. While cataloging the record collection she could speak so knowledgably about rock music, artists, studios, and producers that she totally outdistanced her teenage daughters. As archivist she co-authored For Better and Grander Lives, the Loomis Chaffee 75th anniversary celebration of heritage. And while at Loomis Chaffee, Marillyn opened her home to many Chaffee students, participating in theater and music programs – no boarding for girls back then! Two English exchange students, Jenny Blaiklock (nee Florence) and Sue Butler, were also welcomed into the fold and became loved members of the family. Marillyn was involved in her local community, serving as President of the Windsor Historical Society from 1994 to 1997 and as a Board Member on Windsor's First Town Downtown. She was an active member of the First Church in Windsor, singing in the choir and serving on several church committees including the Prudential Board. Upon retirement from Loomis Chaffee, Marillyn became a long-term volunteer with Hartford Hospital, staffing the reception desk in the surgical waiting room. She fulfilled her volunteer role with great compassion and helped so many to deal with the stress of their loved ones undergoing surgery. Throughout her life, she loved to travel. Whether it was adventures in national parks all over the country or trips abroad, Marillyn was ready to go. England, Japan, China, Mexico, Italy, Poland, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Russia, Switzerland, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia … she returned from all with pictures, stories, and an enormous sense of joy from the experience. These trips were not all simple sightseeing ventures. At various times the adventures included back backing, day hikes, and even zip lining. Predeceased by her husband (Aubrey) of 61 years, Marillyn leaves behind a family who love her dearly. Daughters Loren Loomis Hubbell and Dr. Rebecca Loomis, sons Dirk Loomis and John Loomis (Lisa), grandchildren Peter Hubbell, Emma Hubbell, Adrienne Smith (Joe Masilotti), Alex Gentul (Brittany), Walker Smith, Rob Gentul (Joel Lee), Kyle Schneider (Danielle), and Logan Schneider all deeply grieve her passing and yet celebrate her reunion with ancestors, and her eternal life in heaven. Services will be held at the First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor, on Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Nicole Grant Yonkman, pastor, officiating. In lieu of sending flowers, those who wish to honor Marillyn's memory are encouraged to contribute to First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Ave., Windsor, CT 06096.
